Literally, it seems to say that it's decreasing in number or size, and that's partly true. When rotating equipment such as an engine or electric stepper motor requires a reduced output speed or increased torque. Well, gears are generally used for this task. Gear "reduction" is used specifically to refer to the speed of rotating equipment. The rotational speed of the device is achieved by dividing by a rotational ratio greater than 1:1. This ratio comes into play as the smaller gears start to mesh and drive the larger gears. Although in many scenarios gear reduction reduces speed and increases torque, in others, gear reduction is used to increase speed and reduce torque. Under this demand, the generators of wind turbines use gear reduction to convert a relatively slow turbine page speed into a high-speed mode that increases power. In these applications, the assembled planetary gearbox is the exact opposite of that pattern of decreasing speed and increasing torque.
