In some cases, a single phase driver may be the best choice, but it should not be the only one. The angular resolution of these motors is improved by half-stepping.

To ensure a proper stepper motor driver, it is important to consider the voltage and peak current limits. Unlike a DC motor, a stepper motor can't be operated at high speeds, so the driver must be able to accommodate both the voltage and resistance of each phase. The driver must also have a continuous current rating that is higher than the motor's peak current rating.

A stepper motor driver uses a separate source for its input. A clock signal is used to give the stepping command, while a reset signal sets the final level signals in a defined start position. Other signals that determine the operation mode of a stepper motor include the direction signal and the half/full signal.
